Lake Maninjau isn't only known for its volcanic caldera and the Kelok 44 descent — it's also the birthplace of one of Indonesia's most respected religious scholars and national heroes, Buya Hamka.
Who Was Buya Hamka?
Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, known widely as Buya Hamka, was born in 1908 in a village on the shores of Lake Maninjau. He became one of Indonesia's most influential Islamic scholars, writers, and public intellectuals of the 20th century.
His Legacy
Buya Hamka is best known for Tafsir Al-Azhar, his extensive multi-volume commentary on the Quran, alongside novels that explored Minangkabau culture and society — work that continues to be studied in Indonesia today.
Connection to Lake Maninjau
The lake and its surrounding landscape shaped his early life and are referenced in parts of his writing — a memorial museum near the lake preserves artifacts connected to his life and work.
